A BeppoSAX observation of the coronal X-ray emission of the active binary VY Ari
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a study of the X-ray coronal emission from the active binary VY Ari, using data from both the Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) and the Medium Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (MECS) instruments onboard the X-ray satellite BeppoSAX. Using these instruments, the X-ray spectrum of VY Ari can be studied across two full decades of energy, from 0.1 to 10 keV. The spectrum is well fit, across the whole spectral range, with an optically thin plasma MEKAL model with two discrete temperature components, and with an inferred coronal abundance [Fe/H] ≃ −0.4, corresponding to the average typical value of the photospheric abundance in RS CVn-type binaries.

متن کاملA BeppoSAX/LECS X-ray observation of α Centauri
We present the X-ray spectrum of the nearby binary α Cen AB (G2V + K1V) that has been obtained from observations with the low-energy concentrator (LECS) onboard the BeppoSAX X-ray astronomy satellite. SAX combines, in contrast to previous satellites, simultaneous coverage of the 0.1-10 keV energy range with sufficient spectral resolution to determine emission measure distributions and elemental...
متن کاملA SAX / LECS X - ray observation of the active binary Capella
We present a SAX/LECS X-ray observation of the active binary Capella, the first coronal source observed in the SAX Guest Investigator program. The analysis of this observation, performed using the mekal plasma emission code, shows that the LECS spectrum is well fit by a two-component optically-thin plasma model. A differential emission measure (DEM) obtained by direct inversion of the X-ray spe...
متن کاملThe active binary star II Peg with Beppo SAX
II Peg is an ideal target to study stellar activity and flares, since intense and long lasting flares have been frequently detected from this system at all wavelengths. We report here about a BeppoSAX observation of II Peg. We followed the system for ∼ 19 hours on December 5 and 6 1997 with BeppoSAX and the X-ray light curve resembles the typical behavior of a decay phase of a long-lasting flar...
متن کاملThe X-ray Spectra of VY Scl Stars Are Not Blackbodies
Using ASCA data, we find, contrary to other researchers using ROSAT data, that the X-ray spectra of the VY Scl stars TT Ari and KR Aur are poorly fit by an absorbed blackbody model but are well fit by an absorbed thermal plasma model. The different conclusions about the nature of the X-ray spectrum of KR Aur may be due to differences in the accretion rate, since this star was in a high optical ...
